Floods
A flood is a large amount of water that has overflowed beyond its normal confines usually over dry land. It is often thought floods are caused by much rain however this isn't always the case. Floods can be caused by many different situations.
-Coastal areas flooding once a cyclone or severe storm may causes a surge of sea water which could then result in flooding.
-River levels are higher to start with and then high tide combine with these already high levels and this may potentially cause flooding.
-Flooding may occur when river systems need to carry more water than what is normal or that is expected- this may happen after is has been snowing and the snow has melted.
-Flooding may also occur when the drainage systems fail and become to full leaving the drainage and any excess water overflowing the drains.
- Even something as simple as a beaver dam can cause flooding into the land adjacent to the lake.
Floods can have many negative impacts however there are some positive impacts with them.
Floods can bring ends to drought, and it can also be a natural way for swamps, wetland areas and native waterways to restock and survive. However, floods play a massive part in the spreading of disease as water so many people are force to being submerged in has mixed with sewerage water which is as you would know infested with desease. Flooding can also cause both destruction of life and property; each year thousands loose the gift of life and millions become homeless. Aswell as these losses the whole country suffers financially as coasts for rebuilding and for loss of tourism must be made up.
There are three main clasifications of flood.
The first is a Slow-onset flood. These types of flood can take many days to build-up and they last for weeks or even months on particular occasions. Slow-onset floods can cause major losses of livestock, cutting off of rural towns and major damage to crops, roads and railways.
The second clasification of flood is a Rapid-onset flooding. These floods occur quicker than slow-onset floods as the name suggests and these floods can also be much more damaging. Fast-onsetting floods pose a great risk to the loss of life and of property. This is because there is alot less time to prepare for the damage of the flood, it is also more damaging flood in general as there is a faster, more dangerous flow of water.
The final classification of flood is a flash flood. Flash flooding occurs from relatively short, intense bursts of rainfall, most likely thunderstorms. This is flooding type has the highest chance of death. Many people are lost in flood when entering flood waters on foot or in something not strong
enought to fight the flood. This flood can cause great damage to do with property aswell as causing destruction in lives
Most floods come with warning allowing people to evacuate with time and save any injury or death that may occur ,however this isn't always the case . Sometimes floods can occur with close to no warning catching all by surprise with no time to prepare.
